“Man who Feeds the Land, Ballad of the Red Meat Survivor” is a song that is very close to my heart…
Most of my songs mean something really significant to me, but this one even moreso.
I am an avid reader of the magazine RANGE, and am always watching what is happening within the ranching and agriculture world. When I see that another ranch has gone under, another family attacked for raising beef and trying to produce food, environmentalists who don’t stop to think about who the REAL ORIGINAL environmentalist’s are-it just breaks my heart.
We live in a very different world than the ranching community and cowboys of the past, there are so many improvements and positive changes the passing years have brought with them, yet there is also negative and heartbreaking changes that will never be the same as they were in the “old days.”
This song is for those places and people that still hold on and fight back no matter what. Who won’t give up, and who stand their ground.
This song is for the ranchers, for the cattlemen and women, for the cowboys, for the cowgirls, and for the next generation that will have to fight even harder to protect and preserve this beautiful way of life.
This song was performed with my amazing lead guitarist Nick Luca.
Nick has been with me since my second album that was recorded with Craig Schumacher at Wavelab Studio in Tucson, AZ “Boots and Pearls.” In 2011 Nick toured as keyboardist for Iron and Wine (Warner Bros.). Highlights include performing at Radio City Music Hall in New York, headlining The Green Man Festival in Wales, UK, and appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
