Last night, I did something I NEVER in a million years thought I would do (which is why I didn't blog yesterday...because I wasn't working and was goofing off for once!)
I went to a JAKE OWENS concert.
I'm not kidding either.
Now look, I'm really good at making fun of top 40 country music on today's radio stations.
When songs that start with "So I put on my blue jeans...blah....red solo cup...blah...truck...blah blah" come on, I usually turn it off.
But I realized something last night.
I went prepared to have fun with the great group of girls I was with, but to HATE the music.
I PREPARED myself to hate it.
Before I even stepped foot in the arena, I thought "this is going to be SO bad. I bet he isn't even in tune."
And guess what?
I was WRONG. (Want me to say it again? Yep, I was wrong)
Jake was freakin' amazing. I'm a fan now. For life.
The guy was incredible, his voice was amazing.
- His band was tight (as in I was blown away by them) he was an amazing entertainer, full of energy and passion.
- He obviously loved what he was doing, and LOVED the people he was doing it for.
Basically Mr Jake Owens shattered all of my previous notions about popular country music.
Every. Single. One.
So this NEW Adrian, the one who isn't so narrow minded and closed off realized that, OK so the guy isn't a cowboy.
He doesn't sing about roping, broncs or do ballads.
WHO CARES?
The guy is awesome, and he helped me realize that I have become SO in love with all the awesome music in my own little genre, that I started to ignore/disregard all the other amazing music and performers out there....that I really respect.
I wrote and recorded my new single "A Little Bit Country" that was TOTALLY different for me, it's not every one's cup of tea-but I love how different it is and that it is FUN.
Artist's need to keep things mixed up, and you'll never get new ideas or inspiration just listening to 297463 different versions of "Strawberry Roan", not that I don't LOVE that song (Calm down everyone) ...but diversity in it's essence is important for creativity, and sometimes you REALLY just need a good ol' country song.
Sometimes, you just have to turn on something you can turn up and holler in the truck.
This all doesn't mean that I'm probably going to start listening to Top Country music non-stop 24/7 now, or that I think that is the only way to go...
But I have realized that maybe there is more awesomeness out there than you expect.
Give new country music a chance....you might be surprised at what you find like I was!
xoxo

ps. This doesn't mean I'm quitting singing cowboy music and am gonna start wearing Tim McGraw hats and cut-offs. Although that might be funny.
