Like coffee stains on canvas….

I never used to be a morning person. Honestly, I was horrible at being woken up and usually cranky when someone succeeded in getting me out of my bedroll.

Then this last year, something funny happened. I started loving mornings. Not just the beauty and silence of them-which I have always appreciated. Horseback or not, viewing the sunrise is one of the most moving and beautiful ways to start off your day. I started loving actually getting OUT of bed. Most nights I don’t get to sleep until very late. I work better at night, and what I call my “scratching” seems to take up a lot of time in my evenings. I sing and practice (yes professionals practice…a lot!) and play the guitar, banjo and piano…and sometimes when I finally realize I need to get some sleep, it’s almost time to get up again!

I finally realized why I started loving mornings so much in such a different way now. It came to me today sitting outside with a cup of hot black coffee….I look forward to life. I look forward to creating beauty in someway and sharing it with others-no matter what kind of art it is-it is worth it everyday to create SOMETHING. I get to do what I love, and looking forward to doing it even while you’re sleeping is a sure sign of perfection in a job!

I have people come up to me at my shows all the time, they tell me how much they love music and art and how badly they WISH they could do something like that.

Why not?
Why can’t you?
Most of the time their answer is that they have no talent.
I hate to burst your bubble here people, but that is just not true! Everyone has talent. Everyone has the ability to create something beautiful. And the feeling of finishing something that you are passionate about and proud of is a feeling that just cannot be compared with. It could be painting, sketching, sculpture, dance, music, leatherwork, beading, writing or photography. The possibilities are literally endless.

The only thing you have to do to succeed is to start in the first place…you will never know if you don’t try. One of my favorite things in the world is seeing young people and children explore with their artistic abilities. They have no fear, they don’t worry if someone is going to like or dislike something they paint. They simply create and have faith that it is just how it should be. What happens? Where does that faith go?
Don’t worry about what everyone thinks.
Don’t create only what you think “everyone” (whoever they are) wants you to create.
Branch out.
Don’t be scared.
Create and live surrounded by art…

It will change your mornings, I promise.

  1. The only thing we have to do to do well is to start in the first place…you will not ever understand if we don’t try. One of our very popular things in the world is glimpsing juvenile people and juvenile kids discover with their creative abilities.

  2. I love this Adrian. I picked up my first guitar when I was 68, now I'm playing and writing songs of my own. I have a performance coming up this weekend at a rodeo...am I scared, yep, but I'm jumping on that horse and going for the ride. Keeps a person young, at heart, at least...Love your posts.
